Many users face a strange issue on mac, when the Wi-Fi on Mac stops working. The Wi-Fi menu icon shows a “X” and Wi-Fi: No hardware installed Error. This error may happen on any MacBook i.e. MacBook Pro, Air, iMac, Mac Mini, Mac Pro, and virtually any other hardware.
This errors comes because sometimes when the Mac goes to sleep it looses track of which devices were supposed to be turned On & which were supposed to be turned Off and the Mac OS accidentally left the WiFi completely turned Off. If the problem does not resolve even after reboot then please follow this guide on how to fix Wifi : No Hardware Installed error. There is a very simple fix to this error by resetting the NVRAM (Non Volatile Random-Access Memory) & System Management Controller (SMC).
What is NVRAM ?
The Non Volatile Random-Access Memory (NVRAM) are small pieces of memory that are not deleted when you shut down. They keep a track of things like Time-zone setting, Startup volume choice, Speaker volume etc. Sometimes, NVRAM becomes scrambled and needs to be reset.
What is SMC ?
The System Management Controller (SMC) is a chip in Mac that manages lot of the physical parts of the machine like LED indicators, cooling fans, keyboards & power buttons. When the mac goes to sleep, SMC controls which devices are powered Off to save battery. Sometimes, SMC gets the wrong signal and puts the Wi-Fi adapter in power Off Mode, even when the computer comes back to life.
